Types of Wine, Explained

Red, white, rosé, sparkling, dessert — and the grapes behind them. A clear map of the wine world for beginners.

The Five Main Types of Wine

Red wine is made by fermenting dark grapes with their skins, which give it color, tannin, and structure. Styles range from light and silky (Pinot Noir) to bold and velvety (Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon).

White wine is usually made without skin contact, giving fresher, lighter styles — from crisp and zesty (Sauvignon Blanc) to rich and creamy (oaked Chardonnay).

Rosé gets a short period of skin contact: enough for color and berry fruit, but with the freshness of a white. Most are dry, despite the pink color.

Sparkling wine — Champagne, Cava, Prosecco, Crémant — carries bubbles from a second fermentation. "Brut" means dry, and it's far more food-friendly than its celebration image suggests.

Dessert & fortified wines like Port, Sauternes, and sweet Riesling concentrate sweetness (and often alcohol). The rule: the wine should be sweeter than the dessert it accompanies.

The Grapes to Know First

Most wine you'll encounter comes from a handful of grape varieties. We've written full beginner guides for the most important ones:

  • Pinot Noir — light-bodied red; silky, red-fruited, food-friendly
  • Malbec — full-bodied red; dark fruit, velvet texture, great with steak
  • Chardonnay — the shape-shifting white; from lean Chablis to rich oaked styles
  • Sauvignon Blanc — crisp, zesty white; citrus and herbs
  • Riesling — from razor-dry to honeyed sweet; the most versatile white with food

Other names you'll meet often: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot (structured reds), Syrah/Shiraz (peppery, bold), Grenache (juicy, warm), Pinot Grigio (light, neutral white), and Tempranillo (the grape of Rioja).
